Piet Lippens

Piet Lippens is a lesser known Belgian painter who was born in 1890 and died in 1981. He left for New York at the age of 17! Later, too, he occasionally moved to the States where he had all kinds of jobs. He learned how to paint during his military service in Tournai. After the First World War, Lippens followed some more lessons at the Ghent academy. He painted a lot of landscapes and cityscapes. He had a preference for reality and preferred to paint the slums, factories, prisons, caravans, shipyards and harbors. His style of painting was not avant garde but still very direct and personal. His works are usually fascinatingly painted and iconographically interesting.
