Louis Jacobs

Art painter Louis Jacobs is a representative of the so-called 'gray school of Dendermonde'. Louis Arthur Jacobs was born in Dendermonde on June 7, 1855 as son

of Benedict (bailiff of state resources) and of Eugenia Van der Vynckt.  He died in 1929.  This very productive artist mainly worked small size (oak panels) and evolved from initially gray tonalities to a more colorful palette. It is striking exhuberant use of paint matiere and the sometimes to it expressionism referring invoice. He was in the first place landscape painter with a theme in which Scheldet scenes, winter landscapes and village views with mills and farmhouses certainly form the main part.

Louis Jacobs was also a prominent etcher, published a number of poems of good quality and had one number of inventions on its active.
