Jan Toorop (Johannes Theodorus)
Jan Toorop, born on Java in 1858 died in 1928 in Den Haag, together with Van Gogh and Mondriaan, is one of the most important Dutch artists of the period around 1900. They orientated themselves on the latest international developments in the visual arts and in turn were able to inspire other artists.Toorop never worked from one particular philosophy or idea, but was always guided by his artistic freedom. He collected his ideas on his own intuition from various sources and developed a very personal style. He was not only a painter, draftsman, etcher and lithographer, he also designed tile pictures, stained-glass windows and stamps.
